Modern Spiritualism was a widespread, international movement in the late 19th and early 20th century, and it flourished in Scotland. This lecture by Dr Michelle Foot, Teaching Fellow of 19th Century Art at the University of Edinburgh, will examine how Spiritualism influenced Scottish art during the period 1860-1940. The lecture will explore both séance art by Scottish Spiritualists and paintings and sculptures by Scottish artists who were influenced by Spiritualism’s central belief that life continues beyond death and the spirits can be reached beyond the veil.
