- Thursday 3 June 2021
Gerrit Dou, Rembrandt’s first pupil, became the founding father of the so-called Leiden School of Fine Painters, and one of the most successful painters of 17th-century Holland. Examining Dou’s earliest signed and dated work, An Interior with a Young Violinist, Tico Seifert, Senior Curator of European & Scottish Art & Portraiture, will explain a number of changes to the composition. Remarkable details – the panel is only 30cm high – include the book on the table, which can be identified and offers a new interpretation of this little jewel in the Galleries’ collection.
