Hans Holbein the Younger (1497-1543), one of the greatest German artists of his generation, had a spectacular career in Basel and also enjoyed great success as a portrait painter during his two periods of residence in England. In the context of developments in contemporary Italian and Northern art this talk, by Dr Colin Bailey, will examine the major works Holbein produced in Switzerland and in London, culminating in the masterpieces executed at the Tudor court and for patrons among the German merchants of the Hansa.
