The National Galleries of Scotland (NGS) has enjoyed a partnership with Paxton House since 1993. When it was first established, Paxton was described as the first ‘outstation’ of the NGS with works of art from the national collection placed on long- term loan in the magnificent setting of a purpose-built picture gallery. A lot has changed at the National Galleries in the intervening 25 years but the loans to Paxton House remain an important element in the partnership activities at NGS. In this talk John Leighton, Director-General of the National Galleries of Scotland reviews the role of Scotland’s premier art collection in our country today and looks at how partnership and the sharing of the national collection remains a key part of NGS’s activity.
