A Temple to the Muses: Reimagining Antiquity During the Grand Tour in Kenneth Mackenzie’s Classical Apartments.

In this talk, doctoral researcher Alley Marie Jordan (University of Edinburgh) will discuss ‘Classical mania’ in the Neapolitan apartments of Kenneth Mackenzie, 1st Earl of Seaforth, as seen through the dual paintings by Pietro Fabris. This presentation will link Mackenzie’s apartments with the values and virtues (mis)appropriated from Antiquity, such as otium (leisure), the beatus vir (virtuous man), and the locus amoenus (pleasant place). Jordan will explore how the Classics gave the eighteenth-century Scots in Italy a framework through which to identify their moral and aesthetics senses.
