Landseer's Monarch of the Glen, which has recently been acquired by the National Galleries of Scotland, is one of the most famous paintings of the nineteenth century. Christopher Baker, Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, will discuss its context in the artist's career, how it was commissioned and some of the many later roles it has taken on in the realms of marketing and popular culture.
