About

Pompeo Girolamo Batoni was the portrait painter of choice for 18th-century British aristocracy on the Grand Tour. His portrait of Alexander Gordon shows the young duke dressed in the finest fashions of the day. In this talk, Professor Christopher Breward, Director of Collections and Research at the National Galleries of Scotland, will take a closer look at the portrait and consider what it tells us about prevalent ideas of taste, apparel and masculinity.
