Sir William Fettes, business man and twice Lord Provost of Edinburgh left the residue of his estate for ‘the education, maintenance and outfit of young people’ whose families were unable to give suitable education to their children. By the time the foundation stone was laid in 1864, the aim had become to establish an institution that could compete with the ‘time honoured public schools of England’, the first purpose-built boarding school in Scotland. David Bryce was chosen to design the building, now one of the iconic silhouettes of Edinburgh’s skyline. Friends will be offered a historic and architectural tour of the College, Chapel and more recent architectural projects.
Please note: this walking tour involves stairs.
