As part of the Aye Write Festival (Glasgow, 15-25 March 2018), Christopher Baker, Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery and author of the book 'The Monarch of the Glen', explores the fascinating and complicated history of this iconic painting.

The Monarch of the Glen by Sir Edwin Landseer is one of the most celebrated paintings of the nineteenth century. Christopher Baker’s book explores the fascinating and complicated history of this iconic painting, and contributes to the debates it continues to stimulate since the painting’s acquisition for the nation by the National Galleries of Scotland. Publication of the book will coincide with the painting’s tour to four Scottish venues in 2018 (Inverness, Perth, Paisley and Kirkcudbright).
