What entices us to visit cities throughout the world? Often we are attracted to the great cultural monuments that have come to define those cities over the centuries. In this course we will examine the world’s most beautiful buildings dedicated to culture and the arts, including Michelangelo’s Laurentian Library in Florence, the Opera Garnier in Paris, the Berlin Philharmonie, as well as the world’s most unusual and eye-catching museums.
- 12 March: Libraries – from the mythical library at Alexandria, via the elegant Renaissance ideal, to today’s ‘living rooms in the city’
- 19 March: Theatres – from the ancient theatres of Greece to Palladio’s Teatro Olimpico, from Shakespeare’s Globe to Cedric Price’s Fun Palace
- 26 March: Opera Houses – from La Scala to Sydney, Concert Halls from Amsterdam to LA
- 2 April: Museums – from Doha to Dundee, the value of an iconic building.
All lectures take place on Tuesdays. Please note the venue for these lectures.
