Our series of ‘Books in Focus’ sessions focuses on artists’ books and archive material held in the special collections of the National Galleries of Scotland. This session will examine the work of Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898), whose elegant, sinuous and often grotesque illustrations came to embody the Aestheticism movement in Britain in the last years of the 19th century. We will look at his extensive contributions to the important periodical The Yellow Book, in addition to his illustrations Oscar Wilde’s 1891 play Salome.
The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is located 15 minutes’ walk from Princes Street. It includes two buildings, Modern One and Modern Two, set in a beautiful sculpture park.
