Book Launch: The Italian Renaissance Nude

The nude is central to the development of Western art, being visited and revisited by artists from Titian to Nolde to Jenny Saville. In this talk Jill Burke, University of Edinburgh introduces her new book, The Italian Renaissance Nude (Yale University Press). Focusing particularly on the female nude, the talk will consider how the artistic fascination with the unclothed body was permitted in a society that equated nakedness with sin. This lecture will revisit the ‘traditional’ nude to reveal how this form was controversial and contested from its inception.
