About

In this lecture Alice Strang (Senior Curator of Modern and Contemporary Art) examines the careers of the leading artists Wilhelmina Barns-Graham, born in Scotland in 1912 and Paula Rego, born in Portugal in 1935. Beginning with their decision to leave their home countries and to settle in England, it traces their professional development as they faced challenges and secured triumphs, before becoming established as leading artists in the British art world.

Alice Strang is a former Trustee of the Wilhelmina Barns-Graham Trust and a co-curator of the current exhibition Paula Rego: Obedience and Defiance, which is at the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art Two until 19 April 2020.

This event takes place at Morningside Library.
