In this talk Emily Burns, Assistant Curator, National Portrait Gallery, London will take a closer look at the intriguing self-portrait painted around 1640 by the important Flemish artist, Sir Anthony van Dyck (1599-1641). The work on loan from NPG London is the centerpiece of the display Looking Good: The Male Gaze from Van Dyck to Lucian Freud. The talk will explore the findings of technical examination of the self-portrait, examine the masterpiece in the context of Van Dyck’s other self-portraits, and consider why the artist made such an impression on British portraiture and self-portraiture.
