Professor Murray Pittock FRSE, Bradley Professor and Pro Vice-Principal at the University of Glasgow, will look at the growing importance of Italian art and the Italian art trade in Scotland in general, and in Edinburgh in particular, in the first half of the 18th century. He will identify both the centrality of the role of the Jacobite court in the Palazzo del Re and the central role that Jacobite agents in Edinburgh played in the creation of some of the key institutions and relationships of the Enlightenment. Figures discussed include John and Cosmo Alexander, David Allan, Francesco Fernandi, James Gibbs, Gavin Hamilton, Anton Raphael Mengs, Allan Ramsay and Alexander Runciman.
