A5 (14.8 x 21 cm) single postcard featuring Boats in a Harbour by Claude Monet, from the National Galleries of Scotland Collection.

Monet probably painted this work in his hometown of Le Havre, where he was working in 1873.

In this painting, the middle vessel is undergoing repairs to her stern. Several workers dressed in blue clamber around a floating wooden platform, which enables them to prepare the huge ship for sea.

Monet painted several views of the harbour between 1872-73, one of which was his famous ‘Impression: Sunrise’, which gave rise to the term ‘Impressionism’.

Claude Monet (14 November 1840 – 5 December 1926) was a French painter, a founder of French Impressionist painting.  Giverny is a village in the region of Normandy in northern France. Impressionist painter Claude Monet lived and worked here from 1883 until his death in 1926.
