Laissez Faire by Charles Avery limited edition print
This limited edition lithograph print was specially commissioned for the Gallery of Modern Art’s 50th anniversary. The first edition is part of the National Galleries of Scotland Collection while the other 99 editions are available for sale. All editions are signed and numbered by the Artist.
Laissez Faire illustrates a scene from Avery’s imaginary "Island", a mythical place of philosophical inquiry and narrative invention. Avery illustrates the red-light district of his island, showing an "empiricist" philosopher being taunted to "experience something new". With wit and skill, Laissez-Faire bears witness to Avery’s masterful draughtsmanship and sense of humour.
The Scottish artist Charles Avery is one of the most interesting contemporary artists at present, with a considerable international reputation. Since 2004, the Scottish artist Charles Avery (1973, Oban, UK) has dedicated himself to the invention of an imaginary island, new corners of which he continues to chart through drawings, sculptures and texts.
