Call of the Sea Suite No.9 by John Bellany limited edition screen-print
£375.00
Limited edition screen-print Call of the Sea Suite No.9 by John Bellany in collaboration with Kip Gresham at The Print Studio, Cambridge. Printed on B.F.K Rives 250gm paper.
Hand signed and numbered in pencil by the artist.
This screen-print is characteristic of Bellany’s work depicting Scottish symbolism deriving from the sea and religion.
John Bellany (1942-2013) studied at Edinburgh College of Art and whilst a student he famously exhibited his artworks on the railings of the National Gallery of Scotland on the Mound. A major retrospective of his work was organised by the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art in 2012. He helped change the course of painting in Scotland. His intensely felt paintings of fisherfolk and their precarious life at sea were a direct challenge to the much-diluted Scottish colourist tradition and its landscapes and still lives. The sheer size and raw emotion of Bellany's canvases, their depictions of a way of life that the artist knew from growing up in a Port Seton fishing family - and their elevation of that life onto a symbolic level - were at odds with the decorative, drawing-room pictures of much contemporary Scottish painting in the 1960s.
