The Two Roberts (Robert Colquhoun and Robert MacBryde) Paperback
£11.95
This book marks the centenary of (Robert Colquhoun (born in Kilmarnock in December 1914) and the near-centenary of Robert MacBryde (born in Maybole, Ayrshire in December 1913).
Robert MacBryde (b. 1913) and Robert Colquhoun (b. 1914) met at Glasgow School of Art in 1933, forming a close friendship and soon becoming lovers. In 1941 they moved to London where, through Peter Watson, the wealthy backer of Horizon magazine, they became part of the celebrated Soho group that included Francis Bacon, Lucian Freud, Keith Vaughan and John Craxton, and the poets Dylan Thomas and George Barker.
By the 1950s their post-cubist paintings had become enormously successful: works were bought by the Tate Gallery and the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Hard drinking and boisterous, their hectic lives tended to overshadow their art and as abstraction became the dominant force in European art in the late 1950s, their popularity suffered. Colquhoun died penniless in 1962, aged just 47, and MacBryde died in 1966.
