This book explores the relationship between artist and sitter, the time they lived in, the many famous people they knew, and the reasons why this intimate portrait has acquired such iconic status.

Dr Duncan Thomson, former Keeper of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, is an acknowledged expert on Henry Raeburn. He has published widely including books on George Jamesone, John Michael Wright, Henry Raeburn and Avigdor Arikha.

Lynne Gladstone-Millar was previously a feature writer for The Scotsman before becoming a freelance journalist and writer. Her other books include John Napier: Logarithm John published by the National Museums of Scotland.
