Over 2,000 works by more than 250 artists are catalogued. Broad in scope, the collection ranges from the art of the Stuart court in the early seventeenth century to the late Victorian period – from Isaac Oliver to Lord Leighton. Highlights include important works by artists such as Blake, Gainsborough, Sandby and Turner.

The catalogue is written by Christopher Baker, now the Director of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, formerly Deputy Director of the National Gallery of Scotland. A brief biography is supplied for each artist together with key references for further reading. This is followed by individual catalogue entries which consider in detail issues such as subject, date, function, condition and provenance.

A quarter of the works in the collection are reproduced in colour and many have never previously been published.
