Stone Soup by Cas Willing and Paula Rego (hardback)

Stone Soup by Cas Willing and Paula Rego (hardback)

Stone Soup is a new version of the traditional Portuguese folktale illustrated by thirteen reproductions of artworks by Paula Rego. The story reviewed by her daughter, the designer and writer, Cas Willing, shows the dark humour touches characteristic of Paula Rego’s work.

For centuries, the fable has been read to children to encourage cooperation in times or scarcity, but in this version the protagonist is female. We follow the efforts of this young female traveller who persuades suspicious townspeople to supply her with food for her mysterious Stone Soup, to save herself from starvation.

Dame Paula Rego is a Portuguese-born visual artist who is particularly known for her paintings and prints based on storybooks.
