Talks & Lectures | Walter Geikie: The Life and Labour of Scottish Streets

Walter Geikie’s artwork offers an incomparable snapshot of life in Edinburgh in the early 19th century, a look at the women who worked to feed, clothe and sustain the city. After losing his hearing as a child he was an avid sketcher, recording 20 years of city life.

In this talk researcher and North Herts Museums Curatorial Trainee Freya Purcell offers an insight into both the artist and how his art can help us to understand the lives of the women whose labour made up the city but was rarely recorded. This talk was signed by a BSL interpreter.
