Talks & Lectures | 'A Work of Art in Itself': Displaying the Collection at the National 1859 to Present

In an article on the National Galleries of Scotland published in 1945, the Director, Stanley Cursiter (1887–1976), discussed his approach to creating displays at the National. ‘The arrangement of works of art’, he noted, ‘should be a work of art in itself.’

Dr Patricia Allerston, Deputy Director and Chief Curator, European and Scottish Art, considers how art has been displayed here since its foundation in the mid-19th-century.
