About

Preserving things we love for future generations…

Ever wanted to have a peek behind the scenes to see what goes on before art is hung at a gallery? This display shone a light on the topic and gave a taste of how conservators and conservation technicians preserve art, objects and cultural heritage at the National Galleries of Scotland.

The Scottish National Gallery is currently undergoing refurbishment, which will culminate in new gallery spaces next year. Conservation has been a vital component of this project. Every artwork set to be exhibited has been examined to ensure they are all in great condition and looking their best.

This informative display provided a brief overview of what conservation means – spotlighting some of the methods and technical activities such as framing, tools and scientific research.

As well as explaining what conservation is, the display posed the question – what does conservation mean to you? Interactive elements enabled a personal touch. Visitors could suggest what beloved items they would like to preserve or restore for future generations.

There was also an opportunity to put yourself in the frame by posing for a photo inside an extremely Instagramable picture frame at the photography wall.

The concept for this display was created with input from 3D Design students at Edinburgh College, and project volunteers helped with the design and build.
