Biography

Born 1972
Nationality British
Birth place Plymouth

A major figure in contemporary British art, Anna Barriball works with drawing, film, sculpture and installation to create works that contemplate the overlooked details of our everyday environments. Her interest in sustained, careful looking dovetails with a tactile, sensuous attention to humble materials and commonplace features, like fireplaces, doors and windows. Evoking the histories of conceptual art and minimalism, many of her works appear at first glance to be abstract, but they always maintain a relationship to our day-to-day surroundings. The rhythm between light and dark, or night and day, is an important feature of the artist’s work. Barriball studied at Falmouth School of Art and Winchester School of Art, before completing her MA Fine Art at Chelsea College of Art and Design in 2000. Her work is held in major public collections including Tate, London; British Council Collection; Kunstmuseum Basel; the Whitworth, Manchester, RISD Museum, Rhode Island, USA and the UK Government Art Collection. In 2020 she created the permanent installation Rosewood, a site-specific work for Rosewood Ward, commissioned by Hospital Rooms and the Camden and Islington NHS Foundation Trust. Barriball lives and works in London.
