Dancing Shadows

Kirsty Reid (Scottish National Gallery Project Learning Officer)

Watercolour on paper

Kirsty Reid’s practice considers materiality and mindfulness through watercolour. Working from an evergrowing archive of landscape photographs, she reflects on her time spent in these places to create meditative, dreamlike artwork. This painting was inspired from a note she wrote on a daily walk where she noticed 'a slow rhythm of shadows gently moving and dancing'. The therapeutic process of watercolour painting reflects this quiet moment found in nature. The thin layers of paint evoke the nature of the shadows, capturing this brief point in time between the changes of sunlight.
