Iain Sommerville’s practice is informed by what might be described as folk iconography. This term refers to the recognisable, yet enigmatic, motifs and allegories we often recall from the past.
Arcane customs and festivities, particularly those of the European folk tradition, permeate Iain’s work. Much of his work investigates the customary practices of folk tradition, their use of character archetypes and the objects, costumes and narratives employed in certain festive rites.
