New Acquisition | Encounter by Remedios Varo 1959 (online)

Online via YouTube
  • Tuesday 25 June, 12.45–1.30pm

Due to unforeseen circumstances this talk has been postponed. We hope to reschedule it later in the year.

This is the online streamed version of the live event.

Born in Spain, Remedios Varo (1908–1963) moved to Mexico City during the Second World War. Alongside her close friend Leonora Carrington, she was one of the most important Surrealist artists working anywhere in the world after the outbreak of World War II. Her work – hauntingly beautiful and technically complex – continues to capture audiences to this day. She has a stellar reputation in South and North America, but her work is extremely rare and is rarely seen in Europe. In 2023, National Galleries of Scotland acquired Encounter (1959) – the first painting by Varo to enter a UK collection. Join Tor Scott (Curatorial Assistant, Modern & Contemporary Art) to hear more about the artist’s life, her legacy and her innovative use of automatic processes.
