Our archive holds all sort of objects: how about these snazzy jazz vinyls? They were recorded by the Alan Davie Trio, with Scottish artist Alan Davie on tenor sax, Ron Carruthers on piano and Kenny Duff on drums.
As you can tell from the record’s label (pictured above), the session was recorded at Biggar’s Recording Studio in Sauchiehall Street in Glasgow, around 1948. We actually have two vinyl records with four tracks between them: ‘Lady Be Good’, ‘A 12 Bar Blues’, ‘Mop Mop’ and ‘Good Enough to Keep’.
Davie was born in Grangemouth in 1920 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art.
His early career in the late 1940s involved a period of travel in Europe, before supporting himself by playing tenor sax in the Tommy Sampson Orchestra and selling jewellery he had designed.
Jazz influenced his art too: around this time he had been experimenting with spontaneous and unpremeditated methods of drawing, comparable to free improvisation in jazz.
‘Jingling Space’ was painted around 1950, and is a fine example of Davie’s experiments with automatism.
The vinyl record was given to us in 2014, along with a CD of the recording.
