Biography

Maud Ede was an artist from Florence who is known for her etchings on paper. Most of her known work comprises of etchings of boat and canal scenes in Venice which appear to be influenced by artist James Abbott McNeill Whistler, and early vedutisti; painters who created large scale prints or paintings of cityscapes and vistas. Ede moved to New York when she married Frederick Mortimer Clapp, a poet and art historian who was the first director of the Frick Collection in Manhattan. Her artistic connections extend to her nephew Jim Ede who founded Kettle’s Yard gallery in Cambridge, and who donated works by his aunt to the National Galleries of Scotland.
