Harriet Carr was born in Durham and lived between England and Italy. Carr received no formal art training, although it is thought that she received lessons in watercolour from John “Warwick” Smith. When Carr was 21 years old her brother took her to Italy where they stayed for three years. Although she settled in Derbyshire, she frequently returned to Rome where her eldest son lived. Carr is best known for painting large scale portraits, classical illustrations and English and Italian landscape scenes in watercolour.
