George Sand Landscape with Ruins and a Castle Unknown

Biography

Born 1804
Died 1876
Nationality French

George Sand was the pen name of Amantine Lucile Aurore Dupin, a novelist and memoirist born in Paris. Sand wrote various novels, theatre pieces, and literary criticism, and was known as an extravagant character in French social circles. Dressing in men's clothing, smoking cigars, and having various public romantic affairs, Sand's personal life sometimes overshadowed her literary talent. Not much is known or recorded of her artistic work, but ventures into drawing and painting are not surprising as she kept the company of various artists including Alexandre Damien Manceau and Eugene Delacroix.
