Francis John Williamson was born in Hampstead in London. He studied under the sculptor John Henry Foley and later became his assistant. Williamson sculpted portrait busts and large statues for public sites, including several of Queen Victoria. He also made statuettes, ideal heads and medallions. He exhibited in at the Royal Academy from 1853 and lived for most of his life in Esher, Surrey.
