Elizabeth Nasmyth was born in Edinburgh, the fourth of seven daughters of artist Alexander Nasmyth. Alexander established the Nasmyth school of landscape painting at his home where he taught all his surviving daughters and two of his sons to paint. Elizabeth painted landscape scenes and exhibited less than her five sisters, showing just one work at the British Institution, London, in 1866.
