Alexander Ayton Junior was born in Denny, Stirlingshire, in 1833. With his father, Alexander Ayton Senior, a successful photographer in Londonderry, Alexander Junior followed in his footsteps and set up a photographic studio in Edinburgh in 1875. He advertised the business as “Artist; Miniatures on Ivory; Artistic photo-portraiture”, and it flourished, gaining particular recognition for their photographs of sportsmen. Following Alexander Ayton Junior’s death in 1894, the company continued to trade under Studio of A. Ayton until 1940, first under the leadership of his brother Robert and then his brother George.
