About this artwork
Samuel Bough had no formal artistic training, but his natural gift for drawing and painting brought him enormous success in his lifetime. Bough was elected Associate of the Royal Scottish Academy in 1856, and became a full member in 1875. He was made Vice-President of the Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1878. This watercolour shows the ancient oak forest at Cadzow in South Lanarkshire, at that time part of the hunting estates of the Dukes of Hamilton. Today, it forms part of the Chalterault Country Park.
