Hendrick Goltzius
Tethys. Goddess of the Waters
About this artwork
Goltzius was perhaps the best-known graphic artist of his time in the Netherlands. This print has been made using three wooden blocks - a line block, inked in black, and two separate tone blocks, in ochre and brown, to give shadow and depth. The off-white areas of unprinted paper also form part of the overall design. The image shows a Sea Goddess on a chariot pulled by creatures of the ocean.
