Iain Crichton Smith, 1928 - 1998. Poet. (From the series 'The Seven Poets')
About this artwork
This photograph is part of a series commissioned by Glasgow’s Third Eye Centre to accompany an exhibition of paintings and drawings of Scottish poets by Alexander Moffat. Seven photographs from the series were selected to be exhibited alongside Moffat’s portraits. Iain Crichton Smith wrote poetry in both English and Gaelic, and his long poem ‘Am Faigh a Ghaidhlig Eas?’ (Shall Gaelic Die?) ponders the fate of Gaelic and its associated culture. This image shows the jovial poet in what looks like his living room, manuscript and typewriter close at hand. The bold patterned sofa and flower arrangement on the mantelpiece are balanced against the white expanse of the wall behind.
