About this artwork

Poet and translator Robert Garioch Sutherland was part of an outstanding generation of Scottish poets to emerge in the mid-twentieth century. His poetry was extremely popular. It was almost exclusively written in Scots and he became renowned for his satirical wit. Alongside his teaching post, Sutherland, and fellow poet Edwin Morgan, were literary advisors to the cultural review ‘Scottish International’ from 1968-74. This photograph is part of a series commissioned by Glasgow’s Third Eye Centre to accompany an exhibition of paintings and drawings of Scottish poets by Alexander Moffat. Seven photographs from the series were selected to be exhibited alongside Moffat’s portraits.
