About this artwork

Throughout April and May of 1959 Nicholson and his wife, fellow artist Felicitas Vogler, travelled to Italy, via Greece, with Swan Hellenic cruises. On the journey they visited several locations, including the island of Paros. Although Nicholson disliked travelling as part of a group, the trip proved an important stimulus for new work. This is one of many drawings that Nicholson completed whilst travelling. Rendered in a linear, almost childlike fashion, it depicts the bell tower on the island. This strong graphic line is also visible in Nicholson’s reliefs.
