About this artwork

Shifting between abstraction and figuration, the composition of this painting appears to be based around a bull’s skull, with its horns distinctly identifiable towards the top of the canvas. However, geometric forms take over from the figurative to suggest a target, with a black bulls-eye in the centre. The muted colours and purple background also remove any direct association with cattle. For Scheibitz, text and language are important, therefore the title is significant. With Texas in mind this work could be seen as an abstract representation of the State’s role as the centre of the U.S. cattle industry and its association with the image of a cowboy. The colour scheme also calls to mind the colours of the American flag.
