About this artwork
A highly sophisticated tradition of colour woodcut developed in Japan, independently from the printmaking practices of Europe. In this print, each colour has been successively printed from separate blocks. The subtle colour gradations have been achieved using water-based (rather than oil-based) ink, applied with brushes. Hiroshige was one of the last great Ukiyo-ye or Ukio-e (‘floating world’) artists.
