About this artwork

This poster is for a joint exhibition of work by Warhol and LeRoy Neiman at the Institute of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles. Neiman is an American artist well known for his paintings of athletes and sporting events. In 1977 Warhol was commissioned to create portraits of various sports stars by the art collector and sports enthusiast Richard Weisman, for a series titled ‘Athletes’. Among the stars were the footballer Pelé, the golfer Jack Nicklaus and the boxer Muhammad Ali. While photographing Ali at his training camp, Warhol recalled: “there was a nine-foot-tall portrait by LeRoy Neiman on the wall next to him. I hoped mine would come out as good”.
