During the early 1960s Warhol began to experiment with ways to become recognised and be taken seriously as an artist in the world of fine art. The work he produced at this time is therefore experimental and displays some of the characteristics that would continue throughout his oeuvre, such as the use of appropriated imagery (often photographs found in a library). However, they, often lack the confidence and decisiveness of his Pop images which were to gain him that much desired recognition. In this work he has combined several drawings of figures with washes of contrasting colour, creating a vibrant, busy composition.
