Nile (Paper of River Muds)

About this artwork

The physically accessible format of this piece contrasts with many of Long's works which are made in remote areas and only seen through photographs. It is made of sheets of hand-made paper which contain mud taken from rivers all over the world. From the artist's local River Avon to the Mississippi, the Amazon and the Nile, fourteen rivers are represented. Each page is screenprinted with the name of the river from which the mud used in the paper pulp originated. In the same way that Long's installations bring natural materials into the gallery space, each of the rivers in the book is physically represented.
