This drawing, made using mud collected from the River Avon, demonstrates Long’s primeval fascination with nature and mark making. His practice centres on nature being both the subject and the material, and he utilises enduring forms of lines, circles and spirals in much of his work. He first used mud as a material in 1969, creating a spiral from boot-prints on the floor of a gallery in Düsseldorf. Yet the idea of using mud on paper, in what the artist calls his ‘drawings’, came quite a bit later. For Long, mud is 'a simple, direct natural material'. This compliments his use of his own body, rather than tools, to create the artwork: 'All my work is simple. I like the primal energy of just handprints or fingerprints. It’s like cave painting.'
