Barclay is best known for her large-scale installations which combine architectural structures with handcrafted elements, made using methods of weaving, wood turning, ceramics and print. While hand-printed fabrics often appear in Barclay’s installations, printmaking on paper has become increasingly important to her in recent years. This vibrant image was made using the screenprinting technique which involved Barclay cutting out the numerous ‘cut marks’ we see in order to make a stencil which is then used to make the print. The resulting image gives the appearance of movement in the scissor blades. Barclay is interested in the tensions between opposites which can be seen here in the contradictory sharp appearance of the scissor image and the bluntness of the flat page.
