About this artwork

Rogovin made a point of covering all types of mine workings in Scotland on his tour, from simple slope mines – a hillside shaft inclined downwards towards the seam – to the modernised ‘super pits’ at Monktonhall, or Bilston Glen in Midlothian. This shot is taken at a drift mine – a shaft driven horizontally into the side of a hill – in west Fife. This may have been one of the private pits that he visited, where conditions and health and safety measures were more basic than in the National Coal Board pits.
