About this artwork
This photograph shows the village of West Wemyss in Fife. Rogovin positioned himself on the Main Street beside the tollbooth (its carved stonework visible top left), to reveal a glimpse of the waterfront. The original harbour was built by the Wemyss family in 1621 to export coal from the pits they operated on their estate. As the demand for coal grew, so did the number of local mines. The harbour was a key element in transporting coal for centuries until the development of docks at Methil, along the coast, in the 1890s.
